What a great way to end the Hurricanes’ season! Tonight we played two championship games against the Wolverines to determine the winner of the Tega Cay Parks and Recreation Coach Pitch League. It’s was an amazing post-season for us, after going undefeated in the regular season. We started with a tough loss in our first game against the Wolverines. It is a double elimination tournament, so we still had a chance, but we knew it would be tough since we would have to win 5 straight games against the 4 toughest teams in the league. Every game was close. We started with a win against the Wildcats (Liam, Luca, and Gannon’s team), 5-4. Next, we played the Huskies (Andrew and Landon’s team) and barely won 4-3. Then, we went into extra innings against the Waves, but pulled out the win 10-9. This set us up to play the Wolverines for the Championship, but we’d have to win two games, since they had not lost yet in the tournament. Our first game couldn’t have gone better. Daddy said it was the best defense he’d seen any coach pitch team play. I made several plays at third base against their big hitters that kept the score low until we could get our bats going. The plays Daddy says he’ll remember most were one play I made with a runner on second. I fielded the ground ball, looked the runner back to second, then threw the hitter out at first. After getting the runner out at fist, Jackson threw the ball back to me covering third where I tagged the runner out for a 5-3-5 double play. The other play was a hard fly ball to left field that went all the way into the corner by the fence (this is on the bigger Little League Field at Runde). Our left fielder, John, ran and got the ball, threw it to Xander, the cut-off. At this point the runner is rounding third base, so Xander throws me the ball, and I catch and then throw to Jackson who is covering home (there’s no catcher in this league). Jackson tags the runner out at home. Daddy says he can’t believe that a 6-, 7-, and two 8-year olds could all touch the ball and be able to make such a great play. In the tournament, we probably threw out 6 kids at third base or home, most teams are lucky to get force outs at first base. We finally started hitting and won the first game 15-3! Unfortunately, the second game we ended up losing 3-8. Daddy’s arm was tired from throwing hundreds of pitches over 4 days, and he said he just couldn’t throw any good ones for us to hit. Still, it was a great finish, and if we did lose, we were happy it was to our friends Owen, Peyton, and Michael on the Wolverines.
